Prominent Researcher on Deaf Passes Away

Dr. Jerome Daniel Schein, born May 27, 1923, a professor at Gallaudet in the 1960s and professor emeritus at New York University, passed away at his home in Coconut Creek, FL on Friday, April 16.

Dr. Schein was an international authority on deafness and deafness studies. He was the only person to have held both of the only two endowed chairs of deafness research in the world – the Powrie V. Doctor Chair at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC, and the David Peikoff Chair at the University of Alberta in Canada.

He has authored over 200 referred articles, published 25 books, and monographs, wrote, consulted, and lectured on sensory rehabilitation. He received numerous honors and awards.

While at Gallaudet, Dr. Schein started a program of studies on the demographics of deaf people that has had a great deal of influence over the last 40 years on policy planning and research. He was also involved in initiating the Annual Survey of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children and Youth, a project that has been continued by Gallaudet for over 40 years.

  • Deaf Population of the United States, National Association of the Deaf, 1974

He was Professor Emeritus, New York University, and Adjunct Professor of Psychology, University of Alberta.
