Purpose & Reason for the Use of Shofar

Some interesting thoughts for you.

1) What is the shofar? It is the ram’s horn to blow on Rosh Hashanah and the shape of ram is curve.

2) Why ram, not goat? G-d said “Blow before Me a ram’s horn so that I may remember about the binding of Issac, the son of Avraham as if you had bound yourself before Me.”

3) What if we don’t have a shofar? The Jewish law says that we are not allowed to use different kind of horn such as goat. We only have to use ram’s horn.

4) Why blow shofar? To celebrate the anniversary of the creation of the world.

5) How many blows are necessary? Ashkenaz ¬100; Sephardic – 101; Yeminite – 41.

6) What kind of sound from shofar? Tekia – 1 long blast; Shevarim – 3 short blasts; Teruah- 9 short fast blasts.

At last, the words “Rosh Hashanah” is not found any¬where in the whole written Torah except the words, “Yom Teruah” (the day of the sounding of the shofar). Rosh Hashanah is instituted in the written Torah (Leviticus 23:24-25).

May the shofar brings Messiah come real soon. May your name be inscribed in the Book of Life.
