Maccabi GB
Following being diagnosed as hearing impaired, Team Maccabi GB’s Oliver Kaye, was determined not to let anything get in his way. He has proved just that by being selected to represent Maccabi Great Britain at the forthcoming European Maccabi Games in Budapest.
Speaking about what it means to be selected, Kaye said, “It’s an honour to represent Team Maccabi GB. I’m the one that should be saying thank you for giving me the opportunity to take part in this phenomenal sporting event. I hope others take inspiration that you can achieve whatever you want no matter what disability you have.”
Jody Sacks at the Jewish Deaf Association, who have been supporting Oliver said, “Oliver is a brave, strong and determined young man who following his diagnosis, just before he finished primary school, decided he wouldn’t let anything stand in his way of living life like any other teenager. Whether that be going out with friends or playing sport, Oliver was determined to succeed despite being deaf and it definitely made him stronger. We now see the impact Oliver is having on others by inspiring them to do whatever they are passionate about. Good luck Oliver and Team Maccabi GB!”
Maccabi GB’s Head of Sport, Neil Taylor said, “Oliver is someone we are very proud to have as part of Team Maccabi GB. He is a positive and good natured young man, who shows his team mates and others in a similar situation that having a positive mental attitude, and commitment to overcoming adversity, is enough to fulfil your dreams. Oliver’s hearing loss has not stopped him or his team in their goal of coming home from Budapest with a Gold medal and nor should it. It is this type of determination and belief that epitomises what these Games are about – joining together for a common goal and creating long term bonds and memories that will last a lifetime. Well done Oliver, Team Maccabi GB is proud of you!”
Team Maccabi GB will be competing alongside 3,000 other Jewish athletes from across Europe and Israel, Australia and America from 28th July – 7th August 2019.
