Historic Jewish Deaf school honoured by Nightingale Hammerson Care Home in Wandsworth

Former pupils of the historic Residential School for Jewish Deaf Children (RSJDC) gathered at the Nightingale Hammerson care on Sunday 21 April. They came to see Wandsworth Mayor Cllr Adrian Knowles unveil a plaque marking the site of the school, which stood there from 1899 to 1965. Many of its students spent their childhood years at the school.

Over 70 people, many now long-standing members of the Jewish Deaf Association attended the event together with JDA executive director Sue Cipin and members of staff, RSJDC former teachers Liz Wieneke and Norma Lebihan, Nightingale Hammerson chief executive Leon Smith and Shanee Buxton, headmistress of residential Oak Lodge School for Deaf children which today shares part of the site.

Unveiling the plaque, Mr Mayor, a fluent BSL signer whose late parents were both deaf, said:
