Nazereth-Ilit – The 4th Israel Deaf Chess Championship for Individual Men and Women took place at this city’s Beit Ole “Lavon” Community Center.
28 men and 10 women representing 12 different cities of the country vied for the top honors of the championship.
Among the men the winners were:
1. Alexander Margulis, Beer Sheva
2. Gennady Krivulin, Rishon le Zion
3. Grigorii Malyi, Bat Yam.
Elena Zakharchenko, a resident of Ashdod, was the top finisher in the women’s division, while Ludmila Shvezova of Bat Yam won a silver medal. The third place was earned by Natalia Monastyrskaya of Nazereth-Ilit.
Interestingly, all these three women- medal winners were born in the former Soviet republic of the Ukraine.
The championship was organized jointly by the Municipality of Nazereth-Ilit (Mayor Shimon Gafsu) and the Israel Deaf Chess Council, a nation’s governing body of the game of chess among the deaf, deaf-blind and hard of hearing people.
