With great sadness and broken pained hearts we were informed this morning Sunday May 4, 2020 that Mrs. Chana Arelano passed away after struggling with Covid-19 for almost 4 weeks. Chana has recently lost her father to Covid-19 as well, within the last 6 weeks.
Chana was admitted to the hospital right before Pesach (Passover) in critical condition, she was intubated, and fought the virus, so we thought. She was able to come home this past Friday, May 1, Erev Shabbos אחרי קדושים. We, the Monsey community and neighbors were so excited when she came back home. Chana was still obviously terribly weak, but was still able to spend Shabbos afternoon sitting outside with many women of the area…and then SUDDENLY!!!! Hatzolah was called as she was sitting with her neighbors. Chana was admitted back to the hospital and from there she didn’t make it out alive. She unfortunately had a massive heart attack…
Chana was born deaf, and at an older age she merited to get married to a wonderful and kind man, a Ger Tzedek R’ Dovid, a Tzaddik, a Talmud Chochom who gave away a rich life in sunny California to convert and live life as a Jew. After awaiting many years of being married they were finally overjoyed with their 2 beautiful sweet sons. Chaim the older one is Deaf and part of the Deaf community. He currently attends Yeshiva Nefesh Dovid in Toronto for Deaf bochurim (boys) from around the world whom some for the first time learn Gemara and Talmud in American Sign Language from Deaf Rabbis. The younger son is hearing and is in mainstream yeshiva in Monsey. R’ Dovid, Chana’s husband himself has had many complicated medical issues over the last few years, and as a diabetic he has had some of his fingers removed. He is currently unable to work.
Chana was a wonderful and devoted mother who sacrificed herself for her kids, she did everything for them. Now there is no mother and no grandparents either. These two kids are alone with a sick father and we the community must come together to assist in keeping their future functional and functioning. Unfortunately, the family has struggled with earning an income over the years. We even needed to quickly raise money for the burial itself. We are now raising money for full time care for the younger child for his basic needs, tuition for the older son, daily living expenses for the father, future needs, and all the basic expenses. Our goal is to raise a minimum of one million dollars for this family over the next few days.
Please let’s unite as brothers and keeping in mind ואהבתם את הגר and make sure that the father and his two sons are raised as part of a functional society with a healthy upbringing. May Chana Bas Shlomo Menachem have nachas from shamayim to see her kids and husband are doing well and being watched over and cared for by the community. May we know of no more sorrow.
