JDCC’s 6th Annual Chanukah party was held on a beautiful sunny day, it was 80 degrees outdoors even though it was on December 28th, 1997! It was a nice party. DJ Kurs of Riverside, CA won the Chanukah Trivia Game and the exchange of gifts was a lot of fun!

JDCC is concerned about some people who may want to attend a JDCC event but their finances may not permit their participation. The JDCC Board encourages you to contact us whenever you face this situation. No questions will be asked if you claim that finances are tight at that time and if you are still uncomfortable about this situation, you can always send a contribution at a later time when finances allow and your contribution will also be used to help make it possible for someone else to attend a JDCC event. Another way also can be to offer to assist with planning or coordination of a future JDCC event.

As you know, Judaism is all about helping each other and we do not want anyone to miss an event just because they cannot afford the cost.

We have received numerous calls from organizations asking for assistance in getting a Jewish interpreter or Rabbis that can sign. We are here to serve the Jewish Deaf Community and assist in any way we can whether it be a bris, naming ceremony, bar/bat mitzvah, wedding, funeral, and unveiling services. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns, questions about Judaism or getting assistance in finding an appropriate person.

What are you doing for Passover? Anything special, share it with us!

Dear Sharon,

Dear Sharon (AMV”Sh),

Can you recommend an appropriate Jewish interpreter that is knowledgeable with Orthodox Judaism? My brother is deaf and his wife (my sister-in-law) is hard of hearing. My wife and I have been discussing strategies with them to make this seminar available to them and they suggested we contact you.

The purpose of the seminar is to learn more about the basics of our religious practices. The seminar is 5 days and 4 nights with lectures most of the day. I am guessing that we will need two interpreters (one male and one female due to the sensitivity of some of the subject matter and modesty of the presenters and listeners). Of course we would undertake not only the fees for the interpreters, but also the seminaries (room and board are included).

The seminars are given in the Southern California area (typically Ventura, Ontario or Anaheim). They are given every few months, so there is no hurry at present. We are anticipating sending them sometime within the next year. However, my brother and sister-in-law need a chance to meet the prospective interpreters and get to know their style before going ahead.

Since the seminar material is from an Orthodox perspective, our preference is that the interpreters be practicing Jews, or at least to have prior knowledge of these basic concepts (we can discuss this more in detail). Otherwise, the concern is that if it were all new material, there would be significant difficulty in effectively conveying the correct intent and meaning on the fly.

We are grateful for whatever advice and help you can provide. Thank you again.

To: JDCC News,

Do you know of a Deaf Jewish organization in Canada? We live in Scarborough. I would like my son to have some religious training. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi,

I am looking to connect up with any deaf high school students that are interested in going to Israel in the summer of ’98. If I can get a large enough group together, I will attempt to set up a tour as part of an organized trip through any tour group, such as Young Judea, NFTY or USY, that supports these activities for hearing youth.

These groups currently do not support the needs of deaf Jews. I am hoping that if I can get a number of people interested, they will see the importance of supporting us by providing the appropriate support.

Please respond to both of the following email accounts: [email protected] and [email protected]

Please include your name, email address, phone (V and/or TDD), street address and level of interest. I also have contact information at the various organizations that have organized Israel trips for high school age people. Thank you.

Shalom!

A great piece of work! I’m a full time student at The Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) pursuing a MA degree in Jewish Education specializing in Jewish Deaf Education in NYC. I’m seeking interested ASL interpreters who wish to work in Jewish settings with me. I can be reached via [email protected] or by FAX 212-4522766. BEST OF LUCK, JDCC!!
