Letters to the Editor

Hi Readers! We have had interesting times since the last issue of JDCC News.

JDCC will not be participating at Deaf Expo ’98 which will be at the Ontario Convention Center in November but we are sponsoring a Moonbounce there again.

I am pleased to inform you that a generous donation has been made to JDCC by actress Marlee Matlin through a project with Toys ‘R Us which enabled her to name JDCC as one of her favorite charities. Toys ‘R Us has just published their ‘Toy Guide for Differently-Abled Kids!’ catalog which featured Matlin with my son, Michael Soudakoff and another girl, and this Guide is now available at your local Toys ‘R Us store. Matlin is also scheduled to appear on the Rosie O’Donnell show on December 4th.

Thanks to David Rosenbaum for leading Rosh Hashanah services and group discussion on ‘What JDCC Can Do For You?’. We were honored to have actor Bernard Bragg participate. He made us laugh with his ‘Shofar’ singing while Alan Rich of New York blew it (see the ‘Jewish Deaf Tidbits’ column for more details). Thanks to everyone who participated and took turns in reading the prayers.

Our webmaster has been implementing our new enhancements to the JDCC website in our ongoing efforts to publicize availability of JDCC News throughout the country. One feature is an electronic news service where people with access to the internet can sign up to be informed of the latest information in the Jewish Deaf Community. If you haven’t signed up, visit our website at www.jdcc.org and add your name to the e-mailing list!

Along with the usual articles and columns in this issue, two articles appear in the ‘Interpreter’s Corner’ for your enjoyment. On behalf of the JDCC Board, we wish you a very Happy Chanukah!

Hi,

I work as a Deaf Studies tutor at Van Asch Deaf Education Centre in New Zealand. I teach kids from all ages, and I am Deaf myself. I was browsing through JDCC’s web when I happened to find your organization. Would it be possible if you can give me the name of the place where I can buy the publications (books) that talk about Deaf people in the Holocaust? I would really appreciate if you could help me here as it would be a very interesting topic for me to teach to my students. If you would like to know more information, please email me. I look forward to your reply.

To Whom It May Concern

I received a printout on the “History of Deaf Holocaust Victims” by Sharon Ann Soudakoff thru a friend who attended the recent conference at Gallaudet on this topic. I am very interested in receiving copies of articles printed in various publications. Would it be possible for you to send me a copy of each article? The lab here in our Interpreter Training Dept. would be a perfect place for the students to read these articles and do research. We’d be more than happy to pay for copying expenses.

Hi Sharon,

Notice that the JDCC News is really improving and more interesting excellent various role models as Jewish Deaf people, keep “value” as religious education, and interesting articles about Jewish Deaf issues. That make me to grow more bond to Jewish Deaf community value! Keep good work! Shalom,

Dear Sharon & JDCC News subscribers,

We find that JDCC News newsletters are valuable and very educational. It made us have the courage to write our letters to JDCC to show that we are all interested in learning!

Fantastic to know about “What is Kibbutz Life All About?” (Issue #35 July/August).

Percy and I want to mention about Henrietta Szold and want to inform you that there’s an exhibition about her life and stories in Philadelphia which we saw two years ago. It was worthwhile seeing it!!!

The Jewish deaf school in London, our Headmaster made arrangements for students to take tour on a Kibbutz. We went there for training when I was 14 years old. There were huge farms, they taught us how to take care of farms for a whole day to give us an idea what Kibbutz looks like in Israel.

One of our schoolmate, Benni Icigson (one of 10 Jewish deaf children who escaped from Germany, when Benni was about four years old). He had been training on a Kibbutz for two weeks at the same place where we took our tour. When he was about 15 years old, the headmaster told everyone, “Benno is no longer with us and has moved to Tel Aviv, Israel and living on a Kibbutz. He is a member of the Helen Keller Jewish Deaf Club in Tel Aviv.”

Percy and I visited the Kibbutz and stayed there for one night in 1984. Their food is like a wedding party!
