Letters to the Editor

editorDear Readers,

We hope you will begin to notice the name of Rachel Braver, who now works for JDCC coordinating office office activities as well as writing articles for JDCC News. We are currently expanding the office area to allow more space for JDCC’s projects. Welcome onboard, Rachel!

I attended Rabbi Rebecca Dubowes Shabbat services at Temple Adat Elohim in Thousand Oaks, CA on February 18th. It was great seeing Rabbi Dubowe and her wonderful and supportive Congregation welcome the Jewish Deaf Community once a year. Their guest, Judy Caplan Ginsburgh sang and signed a number of songs. She is a composer and performer of Jewish music.

The Jewish Deaf Community has seen both happy and sad changes in recent years. While more hearing Temples offer interpeted services, Jewish deaf organizations are struggling to survive. Most recently, Temple Beth Solomon of the Deaf in Arleta, CA announced that it is relocating, after 35 years in their own building, to Temple Judea, a hearing temple who has offered space. Temple Beth Or of the Deaf in New York has closed down. On the happy side, Philadelphia Hebrew Association of the Deaf has purchased their own building.

I remember when there were many more Jewish Deaf organizations… the Los Angeles Hebrew Association of the Deaf, Cleveland Hebrew Association of the Deaf, Boston Hebrew Association of the Deaf and Chabad House’s Hearing Impaired Program in Los Angeles.

We are sorry to have Jeff Lubman leave the JDCC board as he is now taking classes. While we will miss not seeing him in Board meetings, we thank him for his support over the years and wish him the best of luck! Jeff Dichter has accepted our invitation to fill the board vacancy.

Preparations for JDCC’s sixth annual Passover Community Seder plans are coming along nicely. We are revising the multimedia presentation with a second edition which is being funded this year by the Steven Speilberg’s Righteous Persons Foundation and Ruth/Allen Ziegler Foundation. We hope to have you join us.

I knew Herta’s history in the past . . . I never forget what she had been lived in her bad time, was brave girl. I thanked some of her gurardians to help her to find her safe place from bad countries. She had good life in America. In my thoughts, she still is nice, bright, and pretty lady for her present age now. Bless Herta!

I just stumbled onto this site. Presently, I’m taking classes in ASL at Seattle Central Community College. I plan on applying to their Interpreter Training Program in the fall. There are almost zero opportunities to connect with any who are Jewish. I’d like to speak to those interested in discussions about their culture and experiences in the hearing community. Thank you.

JDCC News,

I would like very much to learn where I could obtain Hebrew sign language. If you know of any, please let me know. It is interesting that there is such a place for your organization. I will keep on reading. Thank you,

JDCC News,

Could you tell me how I could get in touch with the parents of Isaac Schaeffer? We will be faced with having to make a BarMitzvah for our profoundly deaf son in a couple of years. In Montreal our son Ryan is the only deaf signing child. We have no support from our community nor our synagogue. Merci / Thank-You!

My name is Ariel and I am from Ohio. I came across your page while looking on the internet for an article for my sign language course. I am Jewish and a deaf education major and I would love to do any kind of volunteering with the deaf. I am not sure where you are located, but I would appreciate it if you could let me know of any openings in or around my area (or any contact suggestions) if you know of any. Thank you.

Hi,

Keep up the good work re: your newsletters! I will greatly appreciate it if you’d give me the email address of deaf Jewish chef/caterer from LA? It was mentioned in your newsletter … article about him but I misplaced that particular issue! I believe his name was Jonathan Weiss?

I heard that Hebrew Association of the Deaf has large membership … please may I have their contact information? Also, do you have a membership organization? Zillion thanks! Again, keep up the good work.

Greetings!

I would like to extend my best wishes and best of luck for your 6th annual Passover Seder. It is great to see that Deaf Jewish individuals have access to their religion. Our Jewish community here in Sudbury, Ontario is quite small; we’ll probably only have about 12-15 families participate in our community seders. In “Deaf Today”, where I found your story, it doesn’t indicate what type of signing will be used. Does your community use ASL, or some other system of signing? Again, I wish your community the best, and have a wonderful Pesach!
