We have a new policy regarding the Tzedekah donations. People who donate over $40 will now be listed in its own box. In the past, people would have to order an ad space. Now it will automatically go into the ad space when your contribution is over $40. If you do not wish to acknowledge that your donation is over $40, please request in with your payment that you want to be listed in the Tzedekah page, not in the box.
If you are interested in serving on the 2001 Passover Committee, please contact us at [email protected]. We are hosting it on the Second Evening in 2001 since the first evening falls on Shabbat. Make a note on your calendar and reserve April 8th.
We also request you to share with us about your upcoming Seder programs with us so we can announce it in the next issue.
You may also want to reserve Sunday, June 3, 2001 for the Valley Jewish Festival. Interpreters will be provided and JDCC will have a booth there. It will be at California State University, Northridge.

The Association of the Deaf in Israel is a non-profit government registered organization representing more than 6000 Deaf members (who mainly communicate through sign language) in Israel.
We would appreciate if you could publish our e-mail in your newsletter for anyone who would like to contact us. In particular, we have several projects for which we are seeking funding. We would be glad to send further details on our activities in order to receive support from the Deaf Community in the States.
Of course, we would love to have you visit us here at the Helen Keller Centre to see first hand the activities which we are providing to the Deaf Community in Israel.

My name is Tracy Minkoff. I am currently a Senior at the University of Montevallo studying Family and Child Studies with a minor in Deaf Studies. I was wondering a couple of things about your organization. First of all I was wondering where are you based out of. Also if you had any positions that might be coming available this summer. I have no definite plans on where I want to live, but I was looking at Atlanta. Do you have a branch or office in Atlanta? I know this might sound strange but if someone would get in contact with me I would greatly appreciate it. It would a wonderful experience to get to work with Jewish people (growing up in Alabama they are pretty scarce) as well as deaf individuals all at one time. I stumbled on to your web site by accident, but what a wonderful accident it was! I am Jewish and am currently an Interpreting student in San Antonio, Texas. I attend services at the local Chabbad House here in San Antonio. There is a rather large Jewish Community here in SA, but to my knowledge there is no services for Deaf Jews here. Am I wrong? I have not personally met any Deaf Jews here in SA, but perhaps there is a small group of Deaf Jews here in SA that I didn’t know about. I am trying to find a member of the Deaf Community. My husband was separated from his Jewish father at a young age by his non Jewish mother. He cannot remember his last name however he does know his first name ‘Sergio’. He should be in his 60’s. He lived in the San Jose, California area and owned an auto body shop. My mother in law has passed on without sharing any information. If someone could contact me about this matter, we would appreciate it. P.S. His mother’s name was Alice Ivy-Dunbar if that helps, also he was very accepted by his natural father. This is not someone who would not want to be found. I appreciated the article “Jewish Funeral and Mourning Customs” by Sharon Ann Soudakoff that I found during a web search. We recently lost a wonderful neighbor who was a Holocaust survivor. Being Christian, we were not totally aware of all Jewish customs related to death. The article answered many questions, and allowed our family to pay respects without a faux pas.

I realize that you are not affiliated with JCC’s, but I was hoping you could offer some assistance or spread my message to others that might be able to help. I am looking for an ASL instructor for a class at our Community Center. We are located about 30 minutes north of San Francisco. I would like to address this to Rebecca Schoor, a student at R.I.T. Your article on the Birthright 2000 trip was excellent and I especially want to thank you for your mention of my son, Joey. You honored his memory so beautifully. One of Joey’s reasons for learning sign language was because his beloved Grandma wore a hearing aid, as did his maternal grandmother (Bubby). I have some loss of hearing also and so it meant a great deaf to him to be able to communicate with everyone. He was an “equal opportunity” friend and hated for anyone to feel excluded for any reason. Rebecca, thank you very much! many thanks to Alicia Epstein for bringing Rebecca’s article to my attention. And while I’m at it, I’d tike to express my gratitude to all the RIT/NTID and Drexel students, interpreters and faculty who have shared their loving memories of Joey with me and my family, we treasure each and every one.
