Dear Readers,
Happy Purim!
By now you should have received information on plans for JDCC’s Annual Community Seder on April 8th.
Thanks to Bernard Bragg, Jeff Dichter, Rabbi Rebecca Dubowe, David Rosenbaum, Kenneth Rothschild and Joshua Soudakoff in participating in our new updated Multimedia project! Don’t miss seeing them during our Seder! I look forward to seeing you there!
In September, JDCC will change its subscription rates. Postage rates has gone up several times since we started charging subscription. Effective September 1st, subscribers to JDCC News will cost $25 for 2 years or $15 for per year. Save $5 for 2 years.
It is hard to believe that JDCC News started in January 1994 when we became a non profit organization switching from Creative Services Group founded in September 1992. JDCC News was free to Southern California residents until January 1998. This newsletter is the 51st issue!
I want to thank you all for your support in making this national publication JDCC News a success!
Wishing you all a very happy kosher Passover!
Dear Ms. Dror,
Just a note to congratulate you on the work of your wonderful organization. In a city as large and diverse as Los Angeles, it is important that programs like yours help to serve our community.
Building a viable Jewish community in Los Angeles is an important goal, and I wanted you and your volunteers to know that you are appreciated.

Hi,
I am looking for people ages 18-26 who have never been to Israel at all or never been there on an organized tour to Israel, can get a free trip to Israel through birthright Israel. I went on the January trip it was amazing. It’s for any Jew 18-26 hearing/deaf any one can go, and it was a completely free trip. I am trying to find as many people to go as possible, because it was incredible experience and I want to share it with anyone who qualifies for the trip.. I don’t know who I am emailing I just got this website from a deaf friend and thought it was a good idea if I ask if anyone is interested.. My email address is [email protected] for anyone who is interested.. Thank you!
Shalom, Sharon Ann!
I just received your sweet gift all the way from California. Thanks so much. I want you to know I have been very involved with my local St. Paul JCC and will be making ASL Judaica with the children in summer camp 2001 (teaching ASL art addressing both Tikkun Olam and multiculture) …also have had and will have this year numerous Deaf Art Judaica exhibits at the JCC and Hillel of the Univ. of MN. I hope to find the time to get a photo journal of each of these pieces soon. Just so busy sculpting them and teaching others! TODAH-Thank you

Dear Sir, madam,
Good morning! I am the mother of a 7 year old deaf son who has a cochlear implant and is in a ‘hearing’ yeshiva in Midwood (Brooklyn NY).
I also am a Judaic artist. We got your calendar with the Jewish Holydays. Would you be interested in having some artwork in your calendar (or elsewhere)? I would be happy to provide some. Next week (hopefully) I will have a digital camera and I can send you some samples. You can also look at www. Jewishart.com (scroll your screen to the right in the ‘virtual gallery’), or at the American Guild of Judaic Art.
I am very happy that you provide our Jewish deaf children with all your services, and I will be happy to attribute to your organization, warm regards and gut shabbos p.s., look for my art under ‘Brombacher’

Hello to Sharon Dror,
I would like to know which Friday evening will Rabbi Dubowe’s shul in Thousand Oaks will host the Deaf Oneg Sabbath on this month. Please let me know about it soon.
Sharon, I find out your JDCC magazine is very informative and interested. Well, I would like to sincerely encourage you to please consider about the near-future article on the Jewish Deaf-Blindness Life. You should try to interview Jeff Bohrman of Columbus, OH as A&Q about his Judaism life. He was raised as a primarily oralist and alma mater of the Clarke School for the Deaf. He had tried to resist the sign language as he wanted to remain a strong oral life until his vision started to deteriorate which forced him to start learning the sign language and finally mainstream into some different kind of deaf and deaf-blind cultures in 1980s. He has personally met and known Rabbi Rebecca Dubowe while Rebecca attended the rabbinical seminary in Cincinnati, OH.
Now, he is a director of the state deaf-blind outreach agency. He has Ph.D. He used to work in the pharmacology field until his vision started to fade away. Why not do this??
I must tell you that I found out there are only 6% of the general deaf-blind population whose have good, steady job like I do so successfully at INS. Then only 30% of the general disabled population have such good, steady job then only single percentage of them actually own the house or condo like Jeff, some deafies and I do.
Please email me at home so here, my home email address is [email protected] until I will pull out of AOL and switch to other on this weekend.
Please let me know about a shul in T.O. soon. Thank you so much for your good consideration on the upcoming article of the Jewish deaf-blind people. Shalom,
Scott Seigal

Hi,
I am the mom of a 24 year old daughter who is hard of hearing. She wears two hearing aids and also reads lips, she knows some sign language, I do not know where to turn for help after a much exhaustive search. Jeanette has some emotional problems related to her hearing impairment and rejection from ALL FAMILY MEMBERS. She has no FRIENDS, does not work, can’t focus and also has an auditory processing disability in addition to her hearing loss. I have written letters to congressmen, Senators etc etc to no avail. I finally found a program here in Florida we have lived for the past twelve years. It is called the National Deaf Academy located in Orlando Florida. They only deal with Hard of Hearing and Deaf children, adolescents and adults with emotional and behavioral problems, this is a therapeutic environment staffed by professional who are specially trained and certified in dealing with this population. It comes under Mental Health on Insurance plans but my insurance company refuses to cover it stating that it is not a life and death situation. She sees a psychiatrist and a psychologist but despite the medication and therapy and the support she receives from me things have only gotten worse. As a mother it has broken my heart to see my daughter just waste away, with no life outside of our home. I called my insurance company to file an appeal and of course a recording came on and I left a message. I am now going to send them a letter certified mail so that I can ensure that they get notice. The Dr. Jeanette sees say it is the only and perfect situation for her to really get training the correct therapy, medication and skills so that she can live independently. I am in tears as I write. This is not an institution at all, the cost is $500 per day and the length of stay depends on each individual case. 1 have no respite from Jeanette, she is demanding, lonely, at times combative and a very angry sad young woman. I am begging for any and all assistance that your organization might be able to provide, be it a grant, any other programs that may be suitable. I am divorced and there is no contact with her father at all, not even any financial support. 1 am at the point of breaking down completely. I fight this battle every day of trying to find a solution to this situation. Jeanette does not leave me alone, I have no privacy, no private time just even to read a book. I am her everything and I am not going to live forever so my fear is what will happen to Jeanette. The state of Florida has been of no help. Once again I am begging for some kind of help. May Hashem Bless you all for all the work that you do.
My home number is 561-865-0422 and address is 4994 N. Citation Drive #2-105, Delray Beach, Florida 33445. I am located in South Palm Beach County. I have even contacted the Jewish Federation, the UJA, Our way etc.
Please help.
