In the last two days Prince Charles has paid tribute to his late grandmother, Princess Alice, who risked her life for a Jewish family in World War II. Describing her acts as “selfless” in a moving speech at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, Charles revealed Alice’s life was a great source of pride and inspiration to him.
But the princess’ life was filled with “selfless acts” and she risked her life more than once during the world wars in a bid to help others. The mother of Prince Philip and great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria, Alice was surrounded by royals all her life, yet was unique among them for her dedication to a life of charity.
Born Princess Alice of Battenberg in 1885, her great-grandmother Queen Victoria was present when Alice came into the world in the Tapestry Room at Windsor Castle.
The eldest child of Prince Louis of Battenberg and his wife Princess Victoria, Alice was congenitally deaf and was slow in learning to talk as a child. Her grandmother noticed young Alice’s struggles, leading her mother to encourage Alice to learn to lip-read and eventually speak both English and German.
