Joe Slotnick, president of Temple Beth Solomon of the Deaf (TBS) in southern California announced that Rabbi Warren Levy has agreed to conduct TBS services replacing Rabbi Keara Stein who just finished one year and was at TBS’ 59th anniversary celebration. Rabbi Stein is pursuing full-time work.
Rabbi Levy will conduct their Shabbat service on Sept. 6 and Holy Days services.
Rabbi Levy introduced himself as follows: “I’m originally from New Jersey, and have lived in California since graduating from Northwestern University, where I met my wife, Roma, while organizing the Passover kosher kitchen for the campus Hillel house during our freshman year.”
He was ordained as rabbi 11 years ago at the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies. “I’ve served as a Community Rabbi,” he explains, “providing services to Jews of the West San Fernando Valley living in retirement communities who would otherwise not be able to attend Shabbat and holiday services.
“By bringing the services to them, these otherwise isolated Jews have been able to participate in Jewish life and feel part of a community. I also serve as the Vice-chair of the Rabbinical Assembly’s Beit Din (rabbinical court) for Conversions here in Los Angeles, and in doing so, have the privilege of working with over 200 people each year who choose to become Jewish.
“Additionally, I teach Jewish adult education classes as part of the West Valley branch of the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning.
“The rabbinate is actually a second career for me, as I was a Senior Software Engineer working in
Silicon Valley on operating systems, computer languages and graphical user interfaces for twenty years before becoming a rabbi.”
