Guest Speaker: Charles Katz

Charles Katz will be speaking about “”Time of Soul Searching” which we will focus on Jewish groups’ and individuals’ efforts to do soul searching. Traditional Judaism usually employs songs and chants to help congregants lift their spirits and do soul searching. How do Jewish Deaf people do their soul searching? The lectures and two group discussions will focus on that question. Quite naturally, anyone can do soul searching, even without hearing anything. Examples of soul searching in Judaism and other religions will be shared.

Charles is currently teaching deaf and hearing students in Simi Valley but had taught all grade levels from preschool to university. He is also an ASL artist, creating fairy tales in deaf culture and a mythology based on the history of the Deaf Experience. Born to deaf parents and reared in all-deaf temple in LA, Charles has developed his religious sensibilities by being exposed to Judaism in ASL at a very young age. He is looking forward to share his love of liturgy with JDCC.

Services will be held at: JDCC, 507 Bethany Road, Burbank, CA 91504.
