* Mildred Jean Zisman, Rockville, MD – December 3, 2014

Mildred Jean Zisman, 87 passed away after a courageous battle with cancer.  She was the devoted and loving daughter of Cecelia K. and Maurice Folsom who preceded her in death.  Also preceding her was beloved husband of 45 years, Isadore “Izzy” Zisman.  

Jean was born and grew up in Washington, D.C.  She attended the Kendall School for the Deaf in northeast DC and graduated in 1944.  She then enrolled at Gallaudet College on the same campus where she graduated in 1949. Jean lived in Washington, DC until 2004 when she moved to Rockville.

She was a passionate fan of local sports teams and attended sporting events at all 3 stadiums-Griffith, RFK, and FedEx-as well as Nationals Park, Capital Centre and Verizon Center.   She was a community volunteer and was active in the Phi Kappa Zeta Sorority, Maryland Deaf Senior Citizens, Washington Society of Jewish Deaf, and the now closed National Fraternal Society of the Deaf among other community organizations.  She also enjoyed bowling leagues and local tournaments.

Before marriage, Jean worked for the Veterans Affairs administration.  After raising two children she returned to work part-time for Captioned Films for the Deaf.  In her later years she volunteered at the Misler Center.  

She is survived by her children, Marcia and Harry (Diane); brother Allan Folsom (Judy); granddaughter Kimberly and beloved grand dog Lucky.

* Michael “Mickey” Fields, 72, Maryland

Michael May 14, 1942 – December 7, 2014

Michael “Mickey” Alan Fields was born on May 14, 1942, in Washington, DC, to Raymond and Fern (Oliner) Fields. Mickey grew up in Bethesda, MD. He attended Lexington School for the Deaf, in New York City, from 1948-1949. In 1949, Mickey transferred to the Clarke School for the Deaf, located in Northampton, MA. Mickey was active on the basketball and track teams until he graduated in 1959.

Mickey then returned to Bethesda, MD, to attend Walter Johnson High School, graduating in 1962. He enjoyed being part of their football and wresting teams.

Mickey received his Bachelors of Architecture degree in 1967 from the North Carolina State University School of Architecture. Always active, Mickey participated in the NC State rugby team and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity. After graduation, Mickey moved back to Maryland, where he found contractual jobs. In 1980, he started working at Gallaudet University, the place where he remained for the next thirty-three years.

At Gallaudet, Mickey was a “jack-of-all-trades”: campus planner, space analyst, project manager, undergraduate instructor, designer, architect, and director of construction. He also worked at Home Depot for almost twenty years.

Mickey was the second president of the Washington Society of Jewish Deaf and the designer of their logo. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB).

Mickey married Susan Baldi-Fields on February 14, 1991, and remained happily married for 23 years. He will be remembered as a handyman who loved traveling with his family, camping, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Mickey died peacefully on the morning of Sunday, December 7, 2014 after a long battle with cancer. He was 72.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Susan of Germantown, MD; her two children, Justin (and his wife, Jean-Marie) Baldi of Laurel, MD, and Jessica Baldi of Germantown, MD; his brothers Lawrence (and his wife, Bonnie) Fields of Gaithersburg, MD, and Thomas Fields of Boynton Beach, FL;
and his daughter from his first marriage, Alissa Fields, as well as nieces, nephews and the many people who knew and loved him. Mickey was a devoted and loving grandfather to his grandchildren, Abigail Baldi and Roman Baldi.

A public memorial service for Mickey will be held in the spring at Gallaudet University. The date and details are being finalized.
