* Dr. Robin L. Zane, Ed.D., 70, Davis, CA, January 17, 2022
The first woman and the first deaf educator to lead the State Special Schools and Services Division (SSSSD) of the California Department of Education, died unexpectedly on Monday, January 17th in Davis, CA as a result of previously undiagnosed cancer. She had just turned 70. Robin’s 45-year career began in 1978 in Boston, at the Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of supported CSD’s emphasis on increased language acquisition and access through American Sign Language and written English. She became the middle school principal at CSD in 1998 and spent the next decade working on effective wholistic responses to the needs of students, family members, teachers, and staff. In 2012, Robin became the director of the Diagnostic Center, Northern California in Fremont until her appointment as director of the SSSSD in 2019. Throughout her career, Robin promoted equity strategies in the field of special education. She set high expectations for students and their continuous progress and worked to ensure the highest levels of diagnosis and student-cen- tered instruction. The State Superintendent of Public Instruction described Robin as “an outstanding educator, administrator, and advocate for deaf and blind students and their families.” Robin, who grew up in White Plains, NY, earned her BA in English from the SUNY-Buffalo, her Ed.M. in special education from Boston University, and a certificate of advanced studies from Harvard University. In 2011, at age 60, Robin earned her Ed.D. in special education from the UC- Berkeley. In addition to her love of books, wild flowers, and canine companions, Robin will be remembered by her friends and family as a radiant and compassionate person. She would zero in quickly, almost preternaturally, on the essence of a situation or a person, enabling others to feel special, loved and understood. We deeply mourn her passing. Robin is survived by her devoted husband of 40 years, Greg Hettwer, her adult children, Anna and Matt Zane Hettwer, her sister, Nancie Zane, brother-in-law, Stuart Charme, and many beloved nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by Daniel and Valerie Zane. Published by New York Times on Jan. 30, 2022.
