Full details regarding JDCC’s High Holidays plan is announced on page 5. A big thank you to Eric Brody for taking on this big task of coordinating the Rosh Hashana service and I look forward to meeting some of you at the service!
August 24-25th marks the first Shabbaton held by the Los Angeles chapter of Our Way. It will take place at Bnai David Judea Congregation in my old neighborhood. Jason Moore, a hard of hearing teenager is chairing this event. Rabbi Eliezer Lederfeind from Our Way in New York City will attend the event. Glenn & Debbie Stelzer of New York will be “Couple in Residence”. We hope to have a full report in the next issue of JDCC News.
JDCC celebrates its tenth anniversary next June. Would you be interested in helping with the preparations? A 10th anniversary Banquet Committee will be formed shortly. Please contact me at [email protected] if you are interested. Since we have not decided a June date yet, it would be helpful to know of any other events in June to avoid schedule conflicts. JDCC will have an exhibit booth at Deaf Expo 2001 coming up at the Fairplex in Pomona, CA on November 16th. Deaf Expo 2001 has changed the days to Friday and Saturday this year.
Wishing you all a very Happy and Healthy New Year!
May your name be immediately written down and sealed for a good year in the Book of Life!

Dear Sharon:
I would like to thank you for the comprehensive publication you did about deaf Jews in Argentina. I received the magazines on the mail and I will publish the article in our Kol Bet El weekly.
Next week in our class we will read with the deaf people the article. They will feel very happy to know someone so far away is interested in them.
I also hope to receive mail from other deaf Jews in America and may be, why not someone interested in helping us financially.
Thank you once again for your help and understanding,
Isabel Bacher- [email protected]
Dear Sharon:
We were the proud parents of a child with Down Syndrome, named Dovi, who passed away at the tender age of two and half years old. In his short life he typified true happiness and joy; always with a smile on his face for whomever passed by, capturing the hearts of all who met him. In his memory we wish to start a center that will provide recreational education for children with special needs. The center will offer a unique opportunity for the advancement of the child’s development by giving him/her a chance to play and interact in an atmosphere that meets his/her therapeutic needs.
Your generosity can make a tremendous difference in the life of a special child. We, Dov Zev’s parents and Dov Zev’s brothers arid sisters thank you for joining us in support of our dream for Dovi to always help other.
Please make check payable to Dovi’s Playhouse. Donations are tax deductible. Send it to 1712 Avenue T, Brooklyn, N.Y. 11229 718/998-5399 FAX or email [email protected].

Dear JDCC,
To tell you the truth, I have been feeling kind of bad, be cause I ordered one JDCC mug a while ago and it arrived broken. Is it possible for you to send another one? I was hoping to advertise your name in my house by using your mug! You do so much that is wonderful and needed. Thank you for everything you do.

Hello,
I am Dr. Susan Burch from Gallaudet University’s history department. I am currently writing a book (to be published by NYU Press) about American Deaf cultural history from 1900 to World War II. I am trying to find members of the Jewish Deaf community who were living during this time period and would be willing to let me interview them (by mail and/or in person) about their experiences. Most work on deaf history has neglected the Jewish community and I’d like to correct this oversight.
If you could recommend people for me to contact, I would be very grateful. If you have questions about my work or the format of interviews etc., please let me know and I’ll be happy to explain more.
You may reach me at [email protected], by fax at 202 651 5652, or at my office: 202 651 5921(tty/v).
Thank you so much for your help. I hope I may come up to NY or other cities near Washington and meet you in person.
Susan Burch – [email protected]
Shalom,
I work at a large international company, and because I am an Orthodox Jew, many people ask me questions about Jewish customs. I went on your website at a friend’s suggestion and noticed that in the article about Jewish mourning customs, you don’t mention that a mourner does not sit Shiva on Shabbat and Yom Tov.
A woman in my company just lost her husband, and I noticed in the announcement about her that she is sitting Shiva over this coming Shabbat and Yom Tov. Obviously she doesn’t know the Halachot. Perhaps if you included this little detail in your otherwise-excellent article, you could make a difference towards Jews being able to ob serve Torah more authentically.
Thanks for listening. May you have much success in all your endeavors!
Hi,
My name is Aaron Moskowitz and I am a hearing person living on the Deaf interest floor at Northern Illinois University. I have several friends who will be teaching at a Synagogue just off campus, and we have been wondering about Israeli Sign Language. Do you know of any place where we could purchase a book on Israeli Sign? It sounds like it would be a lot of fun for the kids to learn some prayers in sign. Thank you for your time.
