Barbara and Sidney Ander
From Sheepskin to TTYS
Barbara Roth Ander and Sidney Ander are graduates of New York City’s Public School for the Deaf #47, have been married for almost 40 years and are also business partners.
Barbara became Deaf when she was two years old and was raised in a reform family with two hearing brothers. After graduating from 47, she went to William Cullen Bryant High School in Queens.
Sid came from a reform Deaf family which included a younger brother, Alan. After graduating from Charles Evans Hughes High School in Manhattan, he attended the New York Institute of Technology where he got his bachelor’s degree in 1962, majoring in Mechanical Engineering.
Barbara and Sid have two daughters, Alexis, who is Deaf and an attorney living in Encino, California with two daughters and expecting a third at the end of March. The second daughter, Debbie, lives in Plano, Texas, and has two daughters.
In 1980, the Ander family moved from New York to Fort Worth, Texas where Sid was a chemist in a sheepskin tannery. In 1982, they started Sheepskin Ranch, Inc. and became proficient in producing high quality sheepskins. Genuine sheepskin is most effective in preventing bed sores and they sold their products to home health care companies, hospitals, nursing homes, etc.
After relocating to Fort Worth, they saw the necessity for Deaf related items like TTY’s and signaling devices in Texas. Most Deaf people there weren’t aware of such things. They started Compu-TTY in 1982 as a Deaf-owned distributor of products for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Eventually they moved into the manufacturing sector when Barbara and Sid bought out Krown Research in 1995 and changed the name to Krown Manufacturing, Inc. They moved the entire plant from California to Texas and reorganized under new management. Barbara and Sidney started their business with their own funds, borrowed money from the banks and grew to where they are now.

They approach the CEO’s of large corporations, including those in the Fortune 500, and feel good when they educate top level executives of different corporations consumers on how to associate and work with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
Working With Others
Sid gives his time to work with charitable services in educating other executives and people who have the power to influence. He educates the public about technological advances that Krown Manufacturing has developed. As a Deaf business owner, he knows the needs of Deaf people and works closely with his Engineer to come up with creative ideas that are shared with the outside community.
Passing The Word Around
Sid enjoys talking about the products because he is proud of what Krown has done. Barbara invented the world’s smallest Portable Voice Carryover (“PVCO”) device which attaches easily to any telephone and certain cellular telephone sets and is officially patented.
