Our Deepest Sympathies:
* Fredric “Fred” Preston Waldorf, 73, February 25, 2016
Fredric “Fred” Preston Waldorf was born deaf in Philadelphia, Pa. on August 9, 1943. In his early years, he lived with his grandparents in Philadelphia while his parents worked. Fred was deeply rooted in the Jewish and black communities during his childhood where he frequently played basketball and baseball games. He received his artistic skills as a student at the New Jersey School for the Deaf and continued developing his talent for an additional year with a tutor in Vineland, N.J.
After earning a Bachelor of Science from Gallaudet University in 1968, Fred started a long career as an educator. He participated in Project Hope teaching deaf children. He then returned to his alma mater where he became the first deaf teacher in the state of New Jersey. After relocating to Washington, D.C., he was employed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a forensic fingerprint expert utilizing his science degree from Gallaudet University. However, he felt the call to return to education and left the FBI to teach at the Model Secondary School for the Deaf for ten years. He was a staunch supporter of the Montessori method, believing this to be the most ideal method to enhance deaf children’s learning and writing skills. He served as president of the Washington Society of Jewish Deaf from 1990 to 1992.
Although Fred was an educator and researcher, art was his first love. He enjoyed experimenting different forms of art to express his inner feelings which took him to places in the United States, Europe, and Asia. His recent explorations in art included paintings on steel, copper wall sculptures, wood painting, and fine art with beeswax.
May Fred’s’s life be for a blessing.
