* Saul Lukacs, 87, June 29, 2015
Saul was one of the loyal mainstays in the Los Angeles Club of the Deaf’s greatest Deaf basketball era, starting in the mid 1960’s where the LACD club won 5 straight AAAD national titles from 1966-1970. Saul and our dad, Marvin Greenstone, were heavily involved in behind the scenes activities as managers, fund-raising activities, program book developers, host and committee member of regional FAAD tournaments and great supporters for the LACD basketball teams of that era. Several players during that time are currently AAAD/USADB Hall of Famers, led by the legendary coach Lou Dyer.
Saul attended New Jersey School for the Deaf and Arizona School for the Deaf. He was also heavily involved with the FAAD-Farwest Athletic Association of the Deaf as President for one year and Vice-President for 7 years. Before moving to California, Saul was active in all activities for several years for the old Tucson club.
Saul is also a member of the FAAD Hall of Fame as a leader in 1982.
After retiring from basketball activities, Saul became a soccer referee for many years. He was honored by the AAAD (USADB) Hall of Fame as an official in 1993. According to reports, Saul was one of the first deaf soccer officials in the United States at that time.
He is survived by wife Doris (affectionately known as Pat) and his 3 sons – Jay, Jeff and John.
Saul now is among many of the well-known former LACD’ers and FAAD leaders and pioneers who served the deaf sports community well with heart and dignity–Art Kruger, Tom Elliott, Lou Dyer, Marvin Greenstone, Lil Skinner, and others. Source: Marie Lubman and Myron Greenstone
