Beloved wife of 62 years of Weirton, W.Va., attorney Arthur J. Recht; devoted mother of Scott (Jaime) Recht of Rockville, Md.; Elisa Recht Marlin of Pittsburgh; Jodie (Steven) Krasnick of Huntington Woods, Mich.; and Steven (Geri) Recht of Upper St. Clair, Pa. Loving grandma of Bruce and Jason Recht; Daniel, Barry and Zachary Marlin; Ellie, Marla and Evan Krasnick; and Jacob, Sydney and Rayna Recht. Sister-in-law of the late Rose (the late Harry) Hausman, Sally (the late David) Hearst, the late Allan (the late Florence) Recht, Ruth (the late Edward Rubenstein and the late Charles) Levenson, and Florence (the late Jack) Heyison. Also survived by many loving cousins, nieces and nephews. Janet was born in Steubenville, Ohio, to Morris Karp and Pearl Rothstein Karp. A graduate of East Liverpool High School, she attended the Ohio State University, where she was a member of Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority and graduated with an education degree. She was a proud Buckeye alumna and fan throughout her life. Janet taught in the Alikana, Ohio, school district from 1953-1955. Janet was a life member of Hadassah, and member of Beth Israel Synagogue of Weirton, B’nai Israel Synagogue of Steubenville, Temple Beth Israel of Steubenville and most recently Beth El Congregation of the South Hills. Her benevolence extended to many organizations and individuals. Janet enjoyed traveling, cooking, music, reading, and spending time with family. She was a longtime patron of the arts, including Pittsburgh Public Theater, City Theater and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The Recht family would like to thank Janet’s medical staff and the Right at Home caregivers April, Kim, Cindi, Kristie, Cheyenne, Tammy, Mercedes and Teresa for their loving care of Janet. Services and interment were held on Monday, March 30 at B’nai Israel Cemetery of Steubenville. Contributions in memory of Janet may be made to Hadassah, Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, the Jewish Association on Aging of Pittsburgh, Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the American Cancer Society. * Alvin Jay “Al” Leff, 67, of Phoenix, AZ, March 9, 2015
Passed away peacefully at the Sherman Home Hospice on March 9, 2015. Alvin was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois as the second child of Daniel and Doris Leff. After graduating from Bell School and Lane High School, he attended Gallaudet College (now University) in Washington D.C. Alvin shared great times with his Class of 1971 classmates. Alvin married Donna Haynie Leff, Class of 1973. While living in Chicago, Phoenix, and Atlanta, Alvin was active with many organizations related to sports and associations for the deaf. The majority of Alvin’s career was as Controller of Kitchen and Haynie Royal Tire Company, a company in Atlanta co-founded and run by Alvin’s father-in-law, Ed Haynie. After Alvin retired, he and Donna moved back to Phoenix to spend more time with Alvin’s father, Daniel. Alvin continued volunteering with several organizations, including the Phoenix Association of the Deaf and the Mayo Clinic. Alvin is survived by his spouse, Donna, and his two sons, Issac and Lewis. His brother Marvin and sister-in-law Karen continue to live in Phoenix, as well as Alvin’s father, Daniel. A private, family service will be held on Thursday, March 12, 2015.
