Ingelore Herz Honigstein was born in Kuppenheim, Germany in 1924. Deaf and Jewish, she was considered a double outcast. Embarrassed by her disability, Ingelore’s parent made no attempts to communicate with her, resulting in delayed speech, completing her sentence at age 12. She entered first grade at age 13, but her education was cut short by kristallnacht, after which Ingelore was thrown out of school.
The film chronicles Ingelore’s trials and tribulations in Nazi-controlled Germany and her escape to America. Her story includes a brutal rape by Nazi cadets, a kind New York doctor who performs an illegal abortion in 1940 and her lessons of personal freedom.
