Title: Congregation For The Deaf
Artist: Bettmann
Medium: Photograph – Photography
Description: (Original Caption) One of the most unusual congregations in America is that which “hears” the Holy Word at the Community Center of the Society for the Welfare of the Jewish Deaf in New York. The congregation is composed entirely of deaf persons and persons who are both blind and deaf. Religious services are conducted in sign language. And you may well ask here how persons who are both blind and deaf can possibly understand sign language. Well, each blind person sits beside one of the seeing deaf and after the words of the officiating rabbi are interpreted into sign language by an interpreter who stands with him on the platform, the seeing deaf person transmits the sign by touch language to the palm of the blind person’s hand. The following photos take you to a Friday night service for these people who live in silence and darkness and show you how they “hear” through hand signs.
