What’s a Babka? It’s a Jewish bread. Yes, it is a Jewish bread. When did it start? It started in Poland and Ukraine in the early 1800’s. The word, “babka” comes from the Slavic language, the word, babcia and what does it mean? Grandmother, yes, grandmother. Why, the word, ‘grandmother’? It is believed that grandmothers stayed home and baked sweets and desserts in those days. That’s how the word, “babka” came about.
The grandmothers, mothers, and daughters would make challah in the old days and have extra dough left. What did they do with it? They would roll the dough and spread it with jam or cinnamon then roll it up so you have both Challah and Babka. They’d have challah for dinner and babka for dessert. That’s how it all came about.
