* Gerald “Bummy” Burstein, 91, August 31, 2018, Riverside, CA.
After 57 years as a teacher, administrator and advocate for the deaf community — plus heavy involvement after retirement — Riverside resident Gerald “Bummy” Burstein was buried Wednesday, Sept. 5.
Burstein, who was the namesake of the student center at the California School for the Deaf, Riverside, worked 37 years at the school, was the certified Professional Parliamentarian for the National Association of the Deaf and the author of two books, school spokeswoman Erika Thompson said.
Burstein’s nickname came from his love of the Brooklyn Dodgers — “Dem Bums” — but his work ethic was legendary, Thompson said.
Burstein wrote “Basic Parliamentary Procedure” and “Bummy’s Successful Meeting Procedures” as well as an ASL video, “Bummy’s Basic Parliamentary Workshop.” He was also chairman of Riverside’s Model Deaf Community, which works to build quality of life for the deaf and hard of hearing.
A public memorial service will be scheduled in the next several months. Source: The Press-Enterprise
