Filmmaker Frank Steifel accepts the Best Documentary – Short Subject award for ‘Heaven Is a Traffic Jam on the 405’
His film was one of 10 to be shortlisted for this year’s Oscar documentary short subject films. The film is about Los Angeles artist Mindy Alper and her lifelong struggle with mental illness.
Stiefel who is born and raised in New York City had produced “Ingelore”, a 40-minute documentary portrait of his mother Ingelore Herz Honigstein, a deaf Jewish woman who escaped Nazi Germany at age 15. This short movie, completed in 2009, premiered at Berlin Film Festival in 2010 and aired on Home Box Office (HBO) in 2011.
Stiefel, is now in his 70’s and battling mental health issues. The 90th Academy Awards ceremony was held Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California on March 4, 2018.
