Letters to the Editor

editorThose of you who reside in Southern California and sometimes attend JDCC events will notice new changes being gradually made. JDCC, as a community service organization, relies on volunteerism to carry out its projects. The need for help from people in the community was discussed during a JDCC panel discussion last year and some ideas were proposed by participants to divide and spread responsibilities among different people. In the past year, however, there has been no increase in people taking up additional responsibilities.

JDCC is now exploring ways of having other organizations take up activities and services. JDCC would focus more on its national role through publication of JDCC News and its website and provide support for, but no longer coordinate, services and activities locally. We think that this is the best option because the same people cannot continue to carry the bulk of the tasks indefinitely with no, or very little, help from others.

What’s Coming Up
JDCC will be participating at Deaf Expo ’99 in San Diego, California on Sunday only, November 21st. We will have a booth and need help to run the booth. Adam Stone has agreed to be the coordinator of this booth. To volunteer your time, please contact JDCC. For more information on Deaf Expo ’99, please go to EFTC web site.

To whom it may concern:

I enjoyed reading your subscription and read an article about Nathan Zimble who was a wrestler student and coach. I myself is a wrestler, too and want to meet with him in person. Maybe you have his address and phone number so I would get in touch with him. I am very happy to know that he is Jewish to make me very proud. I am strictly ultra Orthodox to keep Shabbos, kosher and so on. I am waiting for your response! Sincerely yours,

Martin J. Siegal

Hi,

I am a hearing person in New York and have knowledge of sign language from taking two semesters of ASL in college. I am interested in volunteering in the Brooklyn or possible Manhattan area. I have a Bais Yaakov school background and come from an orthodox religious home. If there is a position available or you would like me to send you my resume, please contact me. Thank you,

Hello,

We are planning a trip to Israel at the end of this month! I would like to know if you have any books or pamphlets available with Jewish or Israeli signs. I would like to call during business hours Monday, May 10th or as soon as possible. Could you please send me JDCC’s office phone number? Also if you have any publications or know somewhere I could get something like that, please let me know.

Thank you very much!

Hello, Sharon,

I am looking for a signed performance. Do you know how I could arrange for that for our elementary students? Thanks for your input,

To Whom it may concern,

Is there any possible way that a late deafened Jewish widower (71) years young can meet a nice Jewish girl (senior)? I live in Scottsdale AZ. (former New Yorker). Traveling is not a problem for me. I am retired, and have the time, means, and inclination to travel, to meet the right lady. It would certainly be a plus factor if she signs, or is willing to learn. Thanx for listening – sincerely,

To whom it may concern:

I am a student at Kent State University getting my M.Ed. in Deaf Education. I would like to get involved in the Jewish Deaf Community as I hope to pursue a career in this specific field. Is there an organization in the Cleveland orAkron, Ohio area that I may become affiliated with? Please let me know if there is something I may get involved with in this region. I may be reached at this e-mail address or by mail.

Hello,

My name is Tricia and I just happen to wonder across your site. I was looking for information on the tradition Seven Blessing in a Jewish wedding ceremony. I read the page written by Sharon and was very pleased, everything was written in plain English. Not being Jewish, I was impressed with how easily understood everything was. Then I started surfing around the site and realized that it was a Deaf Community Center. How fabulous!

Where are you located? How many people are involved with the center? The reason I ask, besides basic curiosity, is that for a while I studied ASL and haven’t lost interest in the Deaf Community.

I am rambling. Sorry. Really I am trying to find out what the traditional Seven Blessing are. I am soon to be getting married and while it won’t be a Jewish ceremony I am interested in using the Seven Blessing. The whole ceremony will be a combination of different religious customs. If you could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it! Oh, I would also be curious to get some information about your organization. Thanx a bunch

Ms. Dror,

Thank you again for sending DRA’s information to your email contacts. Many people have contacted us about the Disability Holocaust Project and we are very excited to include them in our work.

I am writing to ask you if you have copies on hand of the sources you listed in the May/June 1996 issue of the JDCC newsletter. I have searched my local libraries for many of these sources, but have been unable to locate any copies. I was hoping that you might have a file of sources and information about deaf Holocaust experiences. Once again, thank you for all your help and support. Yours Truly,

Karessa Cain

Hello, and Please Help!

I need to find a sign for the word “shalom.”

I am an illustrator who is frequently hired to illustrate signs for use in educational magazines. I do not sign myself, but have a shelf of reference books and have worked with several translators on past such jobs. None of them is familiar with a sign for shalom, nor do they know of anyone who translates for Jewish services in my area (Milwaukee, Wisconsin).

If anyone can turn me toward a resource, I would be very grateful.

Good Day!!

I don’t write Hebrew but someday. I will learn this Hebrew language. This is Tod Carter from San Diego, California in USA. My parent’s good friends are hearing and Jewish. So I thought that I would be interested in Hebrew sign language if you know any location for me to search for the list of books or dictionaries or videos. Videos is best to learn. Send me the details to my e-mail [email protected]. Shalom!!!
