Washington Society of Jewish Deaf – Message from New Leadership

Shalom! Happy summer!

As I pen my first President’s Message, it’s strange for me to be sitting here with a new hat – WSJD’s new President. It’s not only an honor but a privilege to serve the WSJD Community and the Board of Directors in this capacity. I am excited and looking forward to continuing to be part of the great WSJD Team as we, together as a community, shape WSJD’s future.

We are pleased to introduce you to the new and dynamic members of the WSJD Board of Directors! Mazel tov to Sarah Rosen Strom and Brendan Stern, two of the three new Directors (formerly called Member at Large). Mazel tov to Michael Pearlman, our new Vice President and David Strom, our new secretary. We thank Lynn Jacobowitz for serving as WSJD’s Vice President for two years.

We also thank my predecessor, Jeff Cohen, immediate past president who led WSJD for six wonderful years. As noted in his outgoing message, Jeff will remain on the WSJD Board of Directors as an advisor to ensure continuity.

I also want to acknowledge the hard work of past and current members of the Board of Directors, program director Dina Rae Padden, webmaster Jane Jonas, and volunteers who gave hours of their commitment to help keep WSJD strong, vibrant, and relevant. Hands waving!

As a WSJD member, I’ve had the opportunity of being on the outside looking in. I’ve often asked the question, “What can the Board do for me as a WSJD member? As a Board member, we are on the inside looking out. We often ask “What does the community want from WSJD?” It’s a two-way street; the community and WSJD Board of Directors are partners. Without a Deaf Jewish Community, there is no WSJD. Conversely, without WSJD, there is no Deaf Jewish Community.

As you know, we’ve been listening to your “wants” and “needs” and now we have exciting events coming up! We look forward to seeing you at these events!
Jewish Deaf Congress’ Chicken Soup for the Jewish Deaf Soul,
co-sponsored by WSJD, Sunday, August 13-16, 2017. Combo and day rates now available. To register, click here.

Grand Slam Sunday: Jewish Community Day at Nationals Park! WSJD has a set of tickets to the Nationals vs. Mets baseball game for Sunday, August 27. For more information, to register, and purchase your tickets, click here. Tickets are available for $ 35.00 per person and must be purchased by August 7.

WSJD ASL High Holy Day services, September 20, 21 and 30, hosted by WSJD and co-sponsored by Hillel at Gallaudet. Look for registration soon.

Again, without you, there’s no WSJD. Be present at WSJD’s programs and events. Join us in building WSJD’s history, growth, ruach (enthusiastic spirit or soul) and its future.
