The recently concluded “Open Window” five-week run (October 14th to November 20th) at the State Theater of California’s Pasadena Playhouse featured three Jewish Deaf actors – Shoshannah Stern, Michael Adam Soudakoff, and Jake Grafman. This was a co-production of Pasadena Playhouse and Deaf West Theater. Shoshannah played the role of Susan, the psychologist while Michael and Jake performed as the young boy, sharing the same role in alternating shows. The play is about a deaf 18-year-old, Caliban (named after the wild child in Shakespeare’s “Tempest”), who has been locked in a basement for most of his life (and emerges without a voice or a language) and is charged with having murdered his father. Two non-hearing women — one a linguist, the other a psychologist — are at odds over how to rehabilitate him after a judge hires them.
