IngeloreGeorge Robinson, in reporting in article for New York ‘The Jewish Week’, on the upcoming annual documentary Fortnight at the Museum of Modern Art film showings, mentioned ‘Ingelore’ as “a deeply felt mixture of “The Miracle Worker” and “The Diary of Anne Frank,” and I don’t mean that as a flippant assessment of what is a very satisfying 40-minute documentary.

Then came Kristallnacht and her idyll was shattered; the Heidelberg school expelled her for being a Jew. She would eventually find a place at a Jewish school for the deaf in Berlin, but returning home one night, she was attacked and raped by two Nazi cadets. Fortunately for the Herzes, they were able to escape from Germany in 1940 and came to America, where Ingelore now lives with her husband, children and grandchildren. Filmmaker Frank Stiefel lets her tell her own story, which she does in a low-key fashion, with warmth, charm and humor. The result is a very satisfying little film.

The ninth annual Documentary Fortnight at the Museum of Modern Art (11 W. 53rd St.) will be held from Feb. 17 – March 3. For information, go to www.moma.org or call (212) 708-9400.
