Letter to the Editor

Question:
I would like to know what is the diff between your organization called JDCC and JDC. There will be JDC convention this coming June in Orlando, Florida. Thank you.

JDCC's response:
We have been asked this question several times.

Jewish Deaf Congress (JDC) is a national organization previously known as National Congress of Jewish Deaf (NCJD). It was founded in in 1956 by Jewish Deaf leaders in New York City who realized the need for Jewish Deaf groups to join together to foster Judaism on a national level in their community.

Alan Hurwitz, NCJD's vice-president for administration stated in 1988, "Our NPO (not for profit) attorney discovered it [501(C)(4) status] and recommended that we change to 501(C)(3) in order to qualify for tax exemption and grant applications... he recommended that we form a separate organization..."

In 1990, Hurwitz set up a new 501(C)(3) organization under the name Jewish Deaf Congress (JDC). The General Assembly at the 1994 NCJD Convention in Toronto, Canada, voted to pursue the concept of a single organization which would preserve NCJD's heritage by officially recognizing the JDC as an outgrowth of the NCJD. The assets and bylaws of the NCJD were officially transferred to the JDC in 1996.

The JDC will host the upcoming Jewish Deaf Congress Conference at Orlando World Marriott Resort in Orlando, FL from June 29 to July 3, 2011.

Jewish Deaf Community Center (JDCC) was founded in 1992 under a different name, Creative Services Group and became a non-profit organization in August, 1994. JDCC exists exclusively for educational, religious, and charitable purposes and does not charge any membership fees.

It first started as a local organization but due to scope of its activities, eventually had nationwide impact. JDCC promotes individual growth, social awareness, productivity and equality,

The “JDCC News” website, which is the organization’s primary means of communication, allows people to sign up to receive recap of new features and announcements posted to the website on a regular basis. Interested individuals can also sign up to receive “JDCC News Alerts”. Valuable archival content is now available with search capability and access to all news reports going back to its first issue, back in September 1992.
