Jewish Advocates for Deaf Education (JADE) in Baltimore, MD is finding ways to bridge Baltimore’s Jewish deaf and hearing communities.
Among its goals:
Raising the community’s level of awareness about needs of the Jewish deaf community within Baltimore’s larger Jewish community.
Supporting local Jewish schools who have deaf parents among their parent body.
Encouraging the participation of the Jewish deaf in religious community life.
Their website helpful resources including information on Video Relay, TTY Relay and tips on communicating with a deaf person.
JADE offers deaf awareness workshops “for children and adults of all ages that help sensitize hearing audiences to the similarities and differences between the larger Jewish community and its deaf contngency. These workshops include sign language and can relate to a myriad of class-related topics”.
The JADE Interpreter Fund provides interpreters for deaf parents at school-related events like: Orientations, Parent-Teacher Conferences, School plays, Milestones.
