A ten-year-old girl has given her waist-length hair the chop to raise money on behalf of her disabled younger brother.

Mia Sorkin snipped 17 inches from her brown locks to raise more than £1,100 for the North Finchley-based Jewish Deaf Association and Chai Cancer Care.

The primary school student decided to cut her hair for the two charities as both have helped her younger brother Kieran, seven, who was born profoundly deaf and without ears.

Bushey2Mia was joined by Ayelet Ezekiel, an eight-year-old Sinai School classmate of Kieran’s, in taking part in the charity haircut.

Sue Cipin, Executive Director of the JDA, based in Woodside Park Road said: “It was a wonderful gesture of Mia and Ayelet to have their beautiful hair cut off to help raise money for the Jewish Deaf Association.

“We are delighted to have been able to support the Sorkin family over the years and the girls’ kindness and generosity means that we will be able to continue helping other families give the best possible start in life to their deaf children.”

The children’s Just Giving donation page will remain open until October and contributions can be made at www.justgiving.com/cutcancer

ParshasVaeschanan     > Parshas Vaeschanan

What did they teach you in Sunday School? To fear G-d?

It's a noble approach. But if that's the only way you look at G-d, then it's not enough. The recipe for a wonderful relationship with G-d and Judaism - and as an extension, life itself - involves a healthy dose of love.

ParshasDevarim  > Parshas Devarim

In this week's parsha blog post, we take a few moments to ponder about what it is that makes us important. Is it because of what we do, or who we know?
