WSJD Open Letter to the Community

JeffCohenfrom Jeff Cohen
President of WSJD and the Executive Board of Directors:

A warm hello to everyone!  My wife, Susan and I are proud parents of two daughters, one is 24 and the other is 20 year old.  When our daughters were of Hebrew School age, we joined Temple Beth Ami, a Reform Jewish congregation.  We worked closely with the Temple’s clergy, the religious school and the Board of Directors to ensure that our needs and that of its  Jewish deaf members of Temple Beth Ami are met. I also participated in the Temple’s Deaf Access Committee, where we held a number of programs and raised money for the Interpreter Fund. In addition, I served on the Board of Directors for five years and on several committees to raise funds for the Temple.

In Memoriam: Dr. Barbara Ella Boyd in TBS Congregation News

Barbara_1983September 7, 1944 ~February 14, 2011

Dr. Barbara Ella Boyd, 67, passed away on Valentine's Day, collapsing while moving from her apartment. Barbara was a Professor of English at California State University, Northridge for more than 30 years, a job she truly loved, only just retiring last December 2010. She was a native of Birchwood, Tennessee, born to parents Hubert and Mistie Hixson Boyd, both of blessed memory. She became a member of TBS in the early 1980s and converted to Judaism in November of 1982, taking on the Hebrew name, Rachel Rut bat Avraham Avinu v’Sarah Imenu. Rabbi Alan Henkin officiated at her conversion and had a great influence in her life over the next eight years. April 27, 1984, Shabbat Kedoshim, Barbara was called to the Torah along with fellow students: Bess Hyman, Dolores Goldman, and Debijo Lovitch on the momentous occasion of their B'not Mitzvot. This ceremony was the culmination of their dedicated 18 months of Hebrew study with Rabbi Henkin, a facet of the TBS Adult Education Task Force.

At the 1985 World Games for the Deaf held at Pepperdine University in Malibu, Barbara was a member of the committee in charge of public relations working with TBS team members: Herb Schreiber, Myron Goldman, Joe Slotnick, David Freedman, Ron Stern, Doug Ellis, Marion Intrator, Bess Hyman, Sharon Dror, Lotte Friedman, Melissa Scott, and Marla Petal. Barbara was very active in the Young Adults Havurah, leading workshops and mentoring at retreats, her favorite role. She sat on the board of the American Society of Deaf Children and the Jewish Deaf Congress.
