Deaf Chassidim Community

Judaism is the first religion on earth. It started with Abraham and Sarah 3,000 years ago. As the population of people grew, it was only natural that slowly, different movements would emerge representing different schools of thoughts.

Chassidim is one of these movements. It started in Eastern Europe around 1700. It is an ultra-Orthodox movement. Although the movement was first started by Rabbi Yisroel Ba'al Shem Tov, it has resulted in about twenty five different groups, each group having their own Rebbe; a wise leader who is believed to possess powers given by G-d.

A story of the late Lee Brody's participation in athletes ran in a past issue of JDCC News #25 Nov/Dec 96. There is another story to his participation and which is why it is being run in this issue.

Boxing was an athletic activity that Lee wasn't proud of. In fact he had it suppressed in his memory, as it was just a small and an unpleasant portion of his very productive and very successful life.

Simon J. Carmel simply defies description. He is a man of many skills and trades. A former physicist. An anthropologist at RIT. A showman magician. A raconteur. A photographer. A world traveler. A linguist of foreign languages. A promoter. A museum enthusiast. A kite flyer. An author. A religious instructor in a summer camp. A former Gallaudet and WGD athlete. An athletic official. A former ski instructor. And much more.

How does he have time for all of these things? Only Simon himself would know. Perhaps he has invented time management before that phrase became today's corporate buzz word.
