The City of Los Angeles Celebrates Deaf Awareness Month

The City of Los Angeles Celebrates Deaf Awareness Month

September, the City of Los Angeles celebrated Deaf Awareness Month throughout the City. Councilmember of District 12, Mitchell Englander, was proud to honor Fred and Debijo Lovitch for their continued commitment to the deaf community through

their volunteer work in our community.

Fred Lovitch was the founder and chairperson for the Deaf Student Banquet (which later became the Deaf CSUNians organization) within the National Center on Deafness at California State University, Northridge. He has also served as a volunteer for many years in different capacities including Chairperson for the 1998 National Congress of Jewish Deaf Convention, which was sponsored by Temple Beth Solomon of the Deaf (TBS), board member for the Greater Los Angeles Agency on Deafness (GLAD), and treasurer for the Golden State Deaf Bowling League.

Debijo Lovitch worked 33 years as a teacher of the deaf at Marlton School, Mulholland Junior High School, and (TRIPOD) John Muir Middle School. She is currently an adjunct American Sign Language instructor at the College of the Canyons. Over the years, Debijo has volunteered for the TBS Sisterhood, the National Congress of Jewish Deaf Convention, and coordinated the children programs for special events for the California Teachers of the Deaf Conference.
