RIT Elects First Deaf Person To Be President

Elizabeth "Lizzie" Sorkin has been elected to serve a one-year term as student government president at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in NY. According to RIT, Sorkin, 24, is the first deaf student to serve in such a role at a U.S. college made up mostly of hearing students.

A resident of Elk Grove, CA, Sorkin is a film/video and animation major who attends RIT through the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (RIT/NTID). "I'm just a regular student." Sorkin said. "I'm the same as everyone else. I'm here to study, I have final exams, I experience stress."

Update Jewish Deaf Book Resources Listing

Since we printed the Jewish Deaf Book Resources article in the March/April 2006 Issue, there are some more books that was not mentioned. Many people have asked for a list of book references that specialize in Judaic sign language, signs for prayers, Israeli Sign Language and the Jewish Deaf Community in a general. Frederick C. Schreiber Distinguished Service Award
Gerald "Bummy" Burstein

Presented in recognition of an individual member of NAD deemed to have contributed, on a volunteer basis and nationwide, to the well being of deaf andhard of hearing people in the United States during the previous two years. The Frederick C. Schreiber Distinguished Service Award is named in memory of the first executive director of the NAD.
