The 1966 Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film, THE SHOP ON THE HIGH STREET (released stateside as THE SHOP ON MAIN STREET) has been cited by critic Kenneth Tynan as "The most moving film about anti-Semitism ever made." A well-meaning carpenter is appointed as "Aryan controller" of a Jewish shop run by a deaf widow with whom he forms a warm friendship and goes from shielding her from knowledge of the newly-adopted Slovak policies regarding Jews and then attempting to protect her when the deportations begin.
