Rebecca Dubowe first became interested in becoming a rabbi around the time she was becoming a bat mitzvah.

“I loved participating in my bat mitzvah and being on the bima,” she said in an e-mail interview last week. “I felt this sense of awe and connection with God.”

But she heard not a word of the proceedings that day
